College Night Oct. 22 at Abe Montoya Rec Center
Las Vegas, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands University and Luna Community College will sponsor the 14th annual College Night Oct. 22 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center at 1751 North Grand Ave. in Las Vegas.
“The prospective students who attend College Night get information and insight about future career opportunities related to fields of study,” said Gil Gonzalez, director of recruitment for Highlands University. “It’s a chance for our faculty and staff to meet with these students to answer questions, and get a feel for what young people are curious about.”
Gonzalez said that financial aid laws have changed significantly, and financial aid staffs from Highlands and Luna are always on hand for College Night.
“It’s crucial that students get up-to-date information about the full spectrum of financial aid that’s available to help fund their education, like student grants, scholarships, loans and work study,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said an important goal of College Night is to help first-generation college students from Northern New Mexico navigate all aspects of college enrollment. This year, the event is being promoted statewide.
“We want College Night to help students transition successfully into higher education,” Gonzalez said.
Highlands University will have about 25 academic departments with information tables at College Night. The university will also have information tables for student organizations.
Luna Community College will also have about 25 information tables at College Night.
“The theme for College Night this year is Monster Ball,” said Jenny Arguello, who works in the Highlands University Recruitment Office and organizes college night each year. “We’ll have fun Halloween decorations and costumes are optional. There will be free finger foods in a light buffet.”
Arguello said that information tables will give small plastic skeletons to people who visit their table. Participants who collect 1o skeletons will get a free College Night t-shirt.
“One lucky student will win a computer tablet donated by our local Day’s Inn/Best Western,” Arguello said. “They just need to register by Monday to be entered in the drawing.”
Registration is not required for College Night, except for the tablet drawing. For more information, call Highlands at 505-454-3593 or Luna at 505-454-2541.
