Native American Student Services

Who we are

The Native American Student Service Office helps all students make the most of their education, offering assistance with everything from academic opportunities to social interaction with clubs and organizations.

Through the Native American Access and Retention Program, Native American students and communities have access to many services that help make a university education accessible, attainable and, above all, an enjoyable experience.

New Mexico Highlands’ Native American Program is here to serve you. We have an “open-door” policy, which means you can come in or call at any time to visit or ask for assistance.

Academic Advising

If you have not yet chosen a major, meet with one of our academic advisors for assistance with planning your education. If you have been accepted into the Student Support Services Program, you will meet with one of the advisors in that program.

Assistance with Financial Aid and Scholarships

Come in for help with finding and filling out applications for financial aid and scholarships. We provide information and applications for Native American Tribal Scholarships. We also provide an annual financial aid workshop and coordinate visits from tribal scholarship programs.

Community Outreach

Part of our services includes visiting communities and schools to participate in career and college fairs and workshops. The Native American Student Service Office continually seeks various ways to provide better services to our Native American students and communities.

Student life

Native American Student Clubs

New Mexico Highlands University is proud to have two clubs dedicated to its Native American students. The Native American Club and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society host many exciting activities and fundraisers.

Student Newsletter

The Native American Student Service Office distributes informative newsletters to students highlighting scholarship opportunities, club news and campus events. Students are encouraged to contribute announcements, jokes or creative writing to the newsletter.

Our Staff

Rochelle Yazzie is the Native American Student Services coordinator at New Mexico Highlands. She is a liaison for the university and 22 Native American tribes. Ms. Yazzie is an alumna of Santa Fe Indian School and New Mexico Highlands University. She earned a B.A. in accounting and an M.B.A. She is from To’hajiilee, N.M.

Teresa Billy is the Native American access and retention coordinator at New Mexico Highlands . She assists students with academic advisement. Ms. Billy is an alumna of Tohatchi High School, Luna Vocational Technical Institute and New Mexico Highlands. She holds an associate’s of applied science, a B.A. in sociology and is pursuing a M.A. in guidance and counseling. She is from Gallup, N.M.
