The Accelerated Master’s Program (AMAP) is offered through the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences (ESS). It is a 83% web-based program that offers students the convenience and accessibility of obtaining their master of arts degree in Human Performance and Sport via online education classes. The program is a total of 36 credits, 30 of which are taken online and the remaining six credits are done in residency during a short summer session offered every July, where students take six credits in three intensive weeks. This is convenient for working professionals who want to obtain their master’s degree with the convenience of not having to leave home for an extended amount of time.
There are three different degree areas:
-
Human Performance and Sport (HPS)
-
Human Performance and Sport, Emphasis in Sports Administration
-
Human Performance and Sport, Emphasis in Teacher Education
These degrees can lead to job opportunities in multiple areas or help to work your way up the tier levels in salary. These include athletic director, fitness trainer, personal trainer, teacher, coach, community health consultant, corporate wellness director, employee wellness consultant, health promotion and wellness leader/director, recreation director, senior citizen recreation director, therapeutic recreation specialist, travel and tourism director, and many more.
The AMAP program can be started during any semester; it is designed to be completed in four full consecutive semesters. The total cost of the program is $14,000, which comes out to $3,500 a semester. New Mexico Highlands University does offer financial aid to graduate students in the form of student loans, $25,000 maximum/$14,000 minimum. For the summer semester you’re on the main campus, you will be provided housing (on campus) for 20 nights and a meal plan at 10 meals per week. The summer AMAP classes in July are three weeks, Mondays through Thursdays. The travel expenses are in addition to the cost of the program and the student is responsible for making those arrangements. We do offer transportation to and from the Albuquerque Sunport; students will be picked up the day before classes begin and dropped off the day after classes are finished.
