Las Vegas Night at the New Mexico Legislature

New Mexico Highlands University joined the Las Vegas Partners for Progress Jan. 26 for Las Vegas Night at the Legislature.

“We really enjoyed seeing many of our alumni who stopped in to say hello,” said Jim Mandarino, coordinator for alumni affairs.

The event at the La Fonda Hotel ballroom gave people time to interact with elected officials and gave local companies a chance to promote themselves. Highlands University Office of Alumni Affairs and Recruitment Office set booths up at the event.

“We really enjoy getting out in the community and hearing from people who have fond memories of Highlands, Mandarino said. “Our reputation is certainly growing.”

More Than 50 Turn Out For Campus Master Plan Meeting

More than 50 people attended the Jan. 27 community meeting New Mexico Highlands University  hosted to present the campus master plan update and receive public comment.

Nearly 20 people voiced their opinions, and asked questions, at the meeting. Las Vegas community members gave public comment along with faculty and students from the Highlands University campus community.

University President Jim Fries said the campus master plan is a work in progress and thanked the community for turning out for the meeting. The process for updating the campus master plan started early in 2009.

The architectural firm preparing the campus master plan update is studioINSITE, with architects Chris Geddes and Dennis Ruppa presenting at the Jan. 27 meeting.

The current campus master plan drawings presented at the meeting are online at www.nmhu.edu.

The campus master plan defines a long-term vision for the university’s main campus. The purpose of the plan is to define a physical vision for the future growth of the campus that supports the university’s strategic plan.

Shary Adams, an architect with Studio Southwest, also presented architectural plans for the new student center  the university will build at the northwest corner of National Avenue and 8th Street.

The university expects construction for the 65,000-square-foot student center to begin in May.

Architectural drawings for the new student center are also online at www.nmhu.edu.

Highlands University Geology Student Danielle Cedillo Wins $50,000 Scholarship

A New Mexico Highlands University environmental geology student was awarded a $50,000 scholarship from a U.S. Department of Education-Hispanic Serving Institution grant.

Scholarship winner Danielle Cedillo came from Salina, Kan., planning to study accounting until she saw the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that border Las Vegas.

“I was always very interested in studying the environment and protecting it,” Cedillo said. “But I was dead sure I wanted to major in accounting until I saw the mountains here and wanted to learn more about them. That’s when I decided to study environmental geology, with a minor in accounting.”

The NMHU Cowgirls hosted the Mountaineers from Western State College on 1/23 at the John A. Wilson Complex. The Cowgirls played their hearts out and in the end it showed, as they won 78-72.

The Mountaineers kept it close as they only allowed the Cowgirls’ biggest lead to be nine points.
