Highlands Social Work Students Raise Money for Haiti

Social work students at New Mexico Highlands University’s Albuquerque and Rio Rancho centers launched a fundraising effort for Haiti earthquake relief, raising $1,700 to date. The fundraiser continues until April 22.

The catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck near Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince Jan. 12, killing an estimated 230,000 people and injuring another 300,000. The earthquake left approximately one million people homeless, and massive infrastructure damage.

“As social work students, it’s important to be involved in helping people not just locally but globally,” said Monica Martinez, one of the senior social work students from the Albuquerque center who is participating in the fundraiser. “Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and as we saw the earthquake disaster and tragedy unfold we wanted to reach out and help those most in need.”

Grizzlies Grab Series From Cowgirls 2-1

The Cowgirl Softball team battled the elements this weekend as they travelled to Alamosa, CO to take on the Adams State Grizzlies. The Cowgirls were set to play a four game series against the Grizzlies but due to weather conditions on 4/2 the games were called. The Cowgirls continued the first game that had already started along with the regular scheduled doubleheader on 4/3, playing only three games in the series.

The Grizzlies took the earlier lead when they scored a run in the second inning. The Cowgirls had a big fifth inning as they took the lead from the Grizzlies making the score 3-1. The Cowgirls were earning one base at a time by singles until Ashley Bryan got up to bat. Bryan hit a double to right center bringing in two RBIs. Unfortunately for the Cowgirls the Grizzlies answered back with three runs of their own in the same inning. Unable to score again, the Cowgirls lost the first game 4-3. Ashley Paiz earned the loss for the Cowgirls on the mound as she pitched then entire six innings with four strikeouts.
