HU Sponsors Free Career and Educators’ Job Fair April 22
New Mexico Highlands University Career Services is sponsoring a career and educators’ job fair April 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.in the university’s Student Center Ballroom, 903 Baca Ave.
The job fair is free and open to the public.
More than 25 employers will be at the fair to discuss career opportunities, as well as summer jobs and internships. Fields represented at the job fair include business, education, liberal arts, science and more.

Student, Professor and Club Recognized at Leadership Banquet.
Amanda Piho earned the ASNMHU Student of the Year Award at this year’s Student Leadership Banquet April 7.
The Office of Alumni Affairs named Mike Petronis as this year’s Professor of the Year, and the Club of the Year Award, sponsored by the Office of Campus Life, went to the Student Ambassadors.

Acclaimed Santa Clara Pueblo Sculptor Roxanne Swentzell at HU April 19
Roxanne Swentzell, an acclaimed Santa Clara Pueblo sculptor, will lecture on “The Language of Clay,” April 19 at 11 a.m. in Douglas Hall, 805 University Ave., Room 217.
Swentzell’s talk is free and open to the public. It is a Highlands University Learning Community presentation.
Swentzell’s sculptures of human figures made of clay have received critical acclaim and won numerous awards.

Local Teacher Juan Gallegos Accepted into English Doctoral Program at University of Arizona
New Mexico Highlands University English graduate student and experienced local teacher Juan Gallegos was accepted into the doctoral program in English at University of Arizona.
“My goal is to return to Highlands as an English professor and apply what I’ve learned at the University of Arizona,” said Gallegos, a 34-year-old Las Vegas, N.M. native. “I like the educational environment here and the goals of the university.”

NMHU Choir Concert April 25, 3 p.m. at First Methodist Church
New Mexico Highlands’ El Coro de Tierra Alta presents “Mozart and More,” at the First Methodist Church on the corner of 8th and National, April 25 at 3 p.m.
The concert will feature Mozart’s Missa Brevis in F and the Misericoridas Domini, Haydn’s Missa Brevis St. Joannis de Deo, and Pergolesi’s Magnificat. The concert will be directed by Andre Garcia-Nuthmann with Linda King on organ and piano and will feature members of the Santa Fe Symphony and New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Soloists include Karlis de Marcos, soprano, Stephanie Salas, alto, Joseph Chavez, tenor and Devin Barad on bass.

April Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The NMHU Campus Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) has created a display in the library showcasing how common sexual assault is. CVPP and the Women’s Center is working to bring awareness to sexual assault and other issues of violence against women such as domestic and dating violence and stalking. Cowboys Ranked #1 in NCAA Central Region
The NMHU Cowboy Baseball program has achieved many things in the 2010 season. They have climbed the national polls in each week of the season and have broken many NMHU records along the way. Head Coach Steve Jones has made NMHU History by becoming the winningest coach in NMHU history with his 400th win of his career, but all of that has been on the road to the Cowboys main goal this season… to be #1 in the NCAA Central Region. In the latest NCAA Regional Rankings, the Cowboys are #1 in the NCAA Central Region with their stellar 29-6 overall record and their outstanding 19-3 RMAC record.

New Mexico Officials Save NMHU Rodeo with $100K Gift
With a very generous gift from New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and N.M. Senator Phil Griego of one hundred thousand dollars, the NMHU Rodeo program has been saved from being discontinued after the 2010 season. The NMHU Rodeo program was very close to being discontinued by the NMHU Athletic Department due to budget cuts, but now they have a new lease on life with the onetime gift from the New Mexico officials.

Track & Field Records Fall in Early Meets
The NMHU women's track and field team has began their 2010 outdoor campaign with a bang. With two meets down, there have been numerous Cowgirls who have given record breaking performances.
Leading the pack of record breakers are seniors Ebonee Carter, Reyna Montano, Carolina Garcia, Candace St. Louis and Sherry-Ann Baggoo, along with sophomore Victoria Dominguez.

Carr Chosen as PING! Baseball Feature Athlete
NMHU baseball player Jason Carr has been chosen by the staff at PING! Baseball as a website feature athlete. Carr is a great choice as he leads the RMAC in On Base percentage (.561) and is ranked second in Slugging percentage (.889) and Batting average (.462). Carr is currently leading the Cowboys in Home Runs (13). Carr was a Preseason All-RMAC First Team selection for the Cowboys in 2010.

#9 Cowboys Sweep Regis University in RMAC Series
The #9 NMHU Cowboys completed their third RMAC series sweep of the season on 4/11 as they thrashed the Regis Rangers by a final score of 25-12 in Denver, Colo. The Cowboys swept the series with scores of 8-5, 3-1, 4-2 and finally broke out and over powered the Rangers in the series finale with a 25-12 pounding. The Cowboys are now 29-6 on the season and 19-3 in RMAC play. The Cowboys sweep keeps them sitting atop the RMAC in first place overall. The Cowboys are currently sitting in first place in the NCAA Central Region as well in the latest poll.
The Cowboys finished the weekend with a .371 team batting average and racked up 13 doubles and three home runs in the series sweep. As a team the Cowboys now lead the RMAC in Batting Average (.389), Slugging Percentage (.599), On Base Percentage (.463), Runs Scored (399), Hits (470), RBI’s (357), Doubles (101) and Stolen Bases (56).

Cowgirls Fall in RMAC Series 3-1
The Mesa State Mavericks proved to be too much for the Cowgirls’ Softball team as they took three of four RMAC games in RMAC play on 4/10-11. The Cowgirls are now 12-20 overall and 8-15 in RMAC play.
Game one would be the only game the Cowgirls would win. The score was 3-0 with the Cowgirls taking the shutout. The Cowgirls kept the score at zero until late in the game when they scored three runs in the sixth inning. Melissa Martinez was on the mound for the entire game. She had 11 strikeouts with only one hit and no runs scored. Andin Anderson led the Cowgirls' winning efforts as she went 3-2 at the plate and scored a run. Roxanne Avalos earned all three RBIs for the Cowgirls.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.
We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation.
