is May 8 at 2 p.m.
Five Psychology Students Accepted into Ph.D. Programs, Others Present Research
Five New Mexico Highlands University students graduating with master’s degrees in psychology this semester are headed for doctoral programs across the country.
These psychology students are Ph.D. bound:
Jesse Valdez, University of Northern Colorado, Ph.D. program in counseling psychology.
Trevor Taylor, Florida Institute of Technology, Psy.D. program in clinical psychology.
Sheri Nsamenang, East Tennessee State University, Ph. D. program in clinical psychology.
Travis Simcox, University of Pittsburgh, Ph.D. program in cognitive neuroscience.
Nicholas Cuccia, Fielding Graduate University, Ph.D. program in clinical psychology.
In addition, Anna Clark was accepted into the University of Denver to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology.

Two Highlands Archaeology Students Accepted into Competitive Forest Service Career Path Program
Two archaeology graduate students from New Mexico Highlands University were hired for the U.S. Forest Service Student Career Experience Program.
The program is a highly competitive Forest Service career path program. Adam Fuselier and Adam Clark were the only two students appointed to two archaeology positions in Oregon this summer.

Two Highlands’ Students Receive Scholarships to Attend National Leadership Conference
Two outstanding New Mexico Highlands University students will attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, thanks to scholarships from the American Association of University Women New Mexico.
Yolie Elias and Crystal Montoya will participate in the leadership conference at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 3 – 5. They are the only two students in the state that AAUW New Mexico selected to receive the scholarship.

Hispanic Outlook Magazine Recognizes Highlands for Number of Hispanic Graduates
The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine included New Mexico Highlands on its top-100 list of universities awarding master’s degrees to Hispanic students.

HU Geology Graduate Accepted into Doctoral Program at University of North Dakota
After Richard Ashu graduates with a master’s degree in environmental geology from New Mexico Highlands University May 8, he is headed for a geology doctoral program at the University of North Dakota.
Ashu’s graduate studies at Highlands University emphasized geophysics. The University of North Dakota has a national reputation for its strong geophysics program.

School of Education Opens Upgraded Curriculum Library With Office Space for The Literacy Council
The Highlands University School of Education held an open house May 5 for its remodeled curriculum library, which features a new state-of-the-art curriculum collection and an office for The Literacy Council of Northeastern New Mexico.
The university’s curriculum library is the only State of New Mexico comprehensive curriculum collection in the northeastern part of the state. It includes all the K -12 curriculum materials adopted by the state this year, including textbooks, CDs, videos and more.

The NMHU Campus Violence Prevention Program (CVPP) has created a display in the library showcasing how common sexual assault is. CVPP and the Women’s Center is working to bring awareness to sexual assault and other issues of violence against women such as domestic and dating violence and stalking. #6 Cowboys Run Over Metro State Roadrunners 10-3
The #6 NMHU Cowboys dropped the Metro State Roadrunners by a final score of 10-3 on 4/30 in Denver, Colo. The Cowboys and Roadrunners played tight early as each team traded long shots out of the park, but the Cowboys high octane offense blew the game wide open in the later innings. The Cowboys would score nine runs in the final five innings to take game one from Metro State in the RMAC series. The Cowboys are now 34-9 overall and 24-5 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will take on Metro State in a RMAC double header on 5/1 in Denver, Colo.

Cowgirls Split in Season Finale
The Cowgirls softball team ended their season on a great note and sent their seniors off in style as they split with the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks in RMAC action. The Skyhawks took the doubleheader on the first day and the Cowgirls cleaned up on day two with two more victories.

Cowboys Win Ninth RMAC Series of the Season; Earn #1 Seed in RMAC Tournament
The #6 NMHU Cowboys wrapped up their ninth RMAC series win of the season on 5/1 as they split in their double header against the Metro State Roadrunners. The Cowboys would win the first game of the double header by a final score of 12-10 but would fall in the series finale 11-3. The Cowboys finish the regular season with a 35-10 overall record and a 25-6 RMAC record. The Cowboys will now be entering into the post-season RMAC Baseball Championship Tournament on 5/5 in Kearney, Neb. The Cowboys have earned the #1 seed in tourney after capturing the first regular season title in NMHU history. The Cowboys will take on the sixth seeded Regis Rangers in their first round game.

Cowgirls Grab Post Season Honors
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has released their All- Conference Awards for the 2010 softball season. Two Cowgirls earned honors on the Second and Third All Conference Teams.

Cowgirls Continue to Demolish Records
The New Mexico Highlands University women warmed up for the RMAC Championship at a cool and windy Don Kirby Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico on Saturday. Despite the weather conditions, the NMHU women came away with three new school records and a boost of confidence heading into the conference meet next week.

Cowboys Clean Up in RMAC Baseball Awards
The 2010 RMAC Baseball Awards might as well have been called the NMHU Baseball Awards as the Cowboys swept the top three awards in RMAC Baseball. NMHU claimed RMAC Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Coach of the Year Honors. Jason Carr was named the RMAC Player of the Year; Drew Vassil was named the Pitcher of the Year; and NMHU Head Coach Steve Jones was named the RMAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his 13 years at NMHU. The Cowboys had a total of seven athletes named to the All-RMAC First Team and two Cowboys also received Second Team Honors. The Cowboys are currently the #1 seed in the RMAC Tournament and #1 in the NCAA Central Region. The Cowboys finished the 2010 regular season with a 35-10 overall record and a 25-6 RMAC record.

#7 Cowboys Crush Regis Rangers 18-4 in First Round of RMAC Tourney
The #7 NMHU Cowboys ran through the Regis Rangers on 5/5 by a final score of 18-4. With the win the Cowboys will advance to the second round of the RMAC Tournament to take on the Metro State Roadrunners. The Cowboys are now 36-10 on the year. The Cowboys will take the field again on 5/6 at 3:00 pm CST in Kearney, Neb.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.
We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation.
