Mark Your Calenders!

The Las Vegas chapter of Alumni will be holding a Viva la Fiesta gathering on July 2 at the Gene Torres Golf Course.  Admission will be $5, and Los Tropicales will be providing the music.  The fun starts at 6pm and will go until 11. Don't miss the party!


New President for Las Vegas Chapter

Louie Trujillo has been elected President of the Las Vegas Chapter of Alumni.  Louie, BA ’94-MA ’97, is a former city councilman and currently works at the state hospital as director of quality control.  Ruth and Ken Mares will be co-vice presidents. Also on the chapter board are Lou Ann Romero, Henrietta Griego, Bobby Gutierrez, Ernesto Salazar and Corine and Nick Leger.
 

NMHU License Plates Update

The first 100 NMHU license plates are sold and alumni and friends can visit the Motor Vehicle Department to pick up a plate. Just $37 of which $25 is returned to the university for faculty, staff and campus projects.


Six Highlands University Chemistry Students Awarded Paid Summer Research Internships

Six New Mexico Highlands University chemistry students were awarded paid research internships at top universities this summer.
 
At the University of Washington, Rachael Lucero will work in a synthetic chemistry lab, Sarah Esquibel will work in a synthetic polymer lab, and Joel Zazueta will work in an X-ray lab.
 
At the University of Central Florida, Jessica DeSanto is working in a synthetic chemistry lab, and Joseph Torres is working in a photo optic lab.
 
Alexander Fonari, the only graduate student in the group, will work in a quantum chemistry lab at Georgia Institute of Technology.
 
The majority of the internship costs are funded through a National Science Foundation Partnerships for Research and Education and Materials grant Highlands University was awarded in September 2009.

NMHU Regional Science and Engineering Fair Student Wins at International Science Fair

A student from Highlands University’s Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair won top honors at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, Calif., May 9 – 14.
 
More than 1,600 high school students from 50 countries competed in the Intel science fair, the world’s largest pre-college science competition.
 
Majdolene Khweis, 17, of Taos High School received $9,000 for winning first place in the Earth and Planetary Science category for her research project, ‘Don’t Let it Slide IV: Fire Factor!’
 
 “This year I was working to find a successful method of re-growing areas damaged by wildfires that mitigates the problems of erosion,” Khweis said. “I used a biodegradable polymer, polyethylene oxide, and ammonium nitrate to prevent water erosion and stimulate plant growth. I found that polyethylene oxide helped to prevent water erosion by margins up to 94 percent.

Graham Qualifies for Nationals; Relay Waits

HU track All-American Angella Graham has qualified for the NCAA National Championships in four events---the Heptathlon, Triple jump, 100M hurdles and 200M dash. Meanwhile the Cowgirls 4 x 100 relay will have to await their fate until selections for the national meet are made on Wednesday.

Competing at the RMAC Championships on May 9-10-11, Graham broke both her own record and the RMAC record in the Heptathlon with 5131 points—well above the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 5000, but finished second to Amanda Doyle of Adams State (5159).

Carr and Bustillos Named to Daktronics All-America Teams

Cowboy baseballers Jason Carr and David Bustillos have been named to the Daktronics Baseball All-America teams. Carr, a Mr. Everything for the Cowboys in the 2010 season, was named to the Daktronics All-America First Team and Bustillos received All-American Honorable Mention honors for his efforts in the 2010 season. The Cowboys finished ranked 6th in NCAA DII and with a final record of 41-13 in the 2010 season. The Cowboys also finished the regular season ranked #1 in the Central Region and earned the right to host the NCAA Central Regional for the first time in NMHU history.

“This is a great honor for both of these guys (Carr and Bustillos). They were leaders throughout the season and played big roles for us. They deserve this honor” said NMHU Head Coach Steve Jones of his latest All-Americans.

Cowgirl Volleyball Inks Four to 2010 Roster

NMHU Head Volleyball Coach Jim Deisler and staff are pleased to announce their 2010 signing class. The Cowgirls have added four extremely athletic and talented athletes to their roster for the 2010 season. Darian Mullen (FR; 5’10”; Outside Hitter; Rio Rancho, N.M), Danielle Schaal (FR; 5’9”; Outside Hitter / Defensive Specialist; Twin Falls, Idaho), Emma Dickenson (JC Transfer; 5’7”; Libero; Marysville, Mich.) and Ashley Nugent (JC Transfer; 6’0”; Outside Hitter; Jackson, Mich.) have all committed to NMHU for the fall and will join Jazmine Harge (FR; 5’10”; Outside Hitter; Boise, Idaho) who signed with the Cowgirls in the early signing period.

Las Vegas Alumni Chapter Seeking New Board Members.  We’re looking for volunteers for the Las Vegas Chapter to serve on its board.  If interested, please contact Jim Mandarino at alumni@nmhu.edu.

Homecoming 2010 will be Oct. 1 & Oct 2. Start planning now. Game will be Saturday, October 2. We will be honoring the class of 1960 with an induction of alumni into the Golden Society.

We are looking for volunteers to be Class Agents for Homecoming events for October 1 & 2, 2010. Class agents will work with the Alumni office to provide activities for their class for Homecoming 2010 including making contacts with their peers to provide information and encourage participation. If you are willing to be a class agent contact Jim Mandarino at alumni@nmhu.edu.
