Water Resources Management

About
We offer the only environmental geology bachelor’s degree program in New Mexico, with an optional concentration in water resources management. Our proximity to natural landscapes like the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Valles Caldera National Preserve, and the new Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge provide unique opportunities for exciting field learning and research. Our strongundergraduate research program gives students intensive, hands-on lab expertise using cutting-edge technology.

State-of-the-Art Laboratories
New Mexico Highlands has state-of-the-art research labs for water quality, earth material analysis, and geographic information systems. Our students also learn how to use the latest digital field instruments for water quality monitoring and mapping. Students gain the scientific training and technical skills needed for immediate entry into the workforce. Others pursue graduate school and excel. Our excellent student-faculty ratio and supportive learning environment build student success.

Our research grants with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and National Science Foundation fund paid student research and internship opportunities that are gateways to employment. The grants also provide scholarships.  

Job Prospects
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment for environmental scientists is expected to grow much faster than most occupations. This is especially true for hydrologists. Possible career paths include water resources manager, environmental scientist, hydrologist, geologist, water scientist, mapping specialist, and more.

Our graduates have landed jobs with employers like Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico Environment Department, and Western Solutions, Inc., an environmental consulting firm.

Our dedicated faculty is nationally and internationally known, with expertise in rock-water interactions, watershed management, environmental geochemistry, aquatic toxicology, surface hydrology, aquatic bioassessment, wildfire and water quality, and more.
