Las Vegas, N.M. – New Mexico Highlands launched a one-stop-office for students to receive answers regarding student services like financial aid and registration.
Michelle Bencomo is the new customer relations coordinator.
“Michelle will be leading this initiative for our students both on our main campus and our statewide centers,” said Edward Martínez, vice president of strategic enrollment management. “The idea is that regardless of where our students are located, Michelle is available to help them.”
Martínez said Bencomo will work with front-line offices such as financial aid, admissions, registration, business office and housing.
Bencomo, a Highlands alumna, has worked in higher education for more than nine years. Previously, she served as Highlands’ scholarship coordinator in the Office of Financial Aid.
“My number one priority is to help ensure students have an exceptional experience at Highlands,” Bencomo said. “I will be super responsive to all students’ needs and will be a point person for resolving their concerns.”
The Las Vegas native said that sometimes students don’t understand university processes, which can be a big barrier.
“I will help students understand and navigate resources at Highlands,” Bencomo said.
Bencomo said being a good listener is a key component of her position, along with doing needed follow up with students and departments.
“My experience in financial aid gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about different departments on campus. I’m participating in additional training that will allow me to expand my knowledge to better serve all our students,” Bencomo said.
Bencomo may be reached at 505-454-3006 or via email at studenthelp@nmhu.edu Or visit her office in the Felix Martinez Building, Room 139A, 800 University Ave.
Bencomo’s new position is part of the university’s Office of Strategic Enrollment Management.
