Highlands University Signs Agreement With N.M. Veterans Services For Santa Fe Vets

New Mexico Highlands University signed an agreement with the State of New Mexico Department of Veterans Services in December aimed at increasing small business education opportunities for veterans through the university’s Santa Fe Center.

The new memorandum of understanding calls for Highlands University to provide entrepreneurial, management and other business courses to veterans through its School of Business. In turn, the Department of Veterans Services will provide veterans with information about educational offerings at the university.

“Our entrepreneurial business courses, designed by Dr. Rob Reider, will give veterans tools to be more successful in their small businesses,” said Steve Martinez, director for the university’s Santa Fe Center. “We’ll provide classroom instruction in Santa Fe so vets won’t need to drive to Albuquerque for these types of business courses.”

We’re excited to be working with the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services Cabinet Secretary John Garcia on this partnership. He’s a national leader in developing entrepreneurial business programs for veterans,” Martinez said.

Martinez said that Lloyd Calderon, director for the Veterans Business Resource Center in Albuquerque, was instrumental in helping forge the agreement between Highlands University and the state Department of Veterans Services.

“Because Highlands is a V.A. certified school, it can teach entrepreneurship courses and the V.A. will pay for the training through the G.I. bill for qualified veterans and their families,” Calderon said. “This new memorandum of understanding with Highlands will assist us in meeting our mission of helping vets create wealth for themselves and their families.”

The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services opened the Veterans Business Resource Center in February 2008 to provide services to help veterans create and expand small businesses.

Calderon said New Mexico is the first state in the nation to provide comprehensive small business development services to disabled veterans.

The Highlands University Santa Fe Center will begin offering two entrepreneurial business classes for veterans in March. Veterans and others interested in registering for the classes may contact Martinez at 505-428-1742 or scmartinez@nmhu.edu

The Highlands University Santa Fe Center is at 6401 Richards Ave., Room 302D on the Santa Fe Community College campus. The university’s Web site is www.nmhu.edu
