“College Night 2010” Feb. 2 at Abe Montoya Rec Center
New Mexico Highlands University and Luna Community College will sponsor the 12th annual “College Night 2010” Feb. 2 from 5-7 p.m. at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center at 1751 North Grand Ave. in Las Vegas.
The Highlands University Recruitment Office said about 40 university academic departments will have information tables at the event. Highlands will also have information tables for student organizations like the Student Ambassadors and the Native American Club. Luna will also have about 40 information tables at College Night.
“The main purpose of College Night is to inform students in our northern region of the state about how they can transition successfully into higher education,” said Gil Gonzalez, director of recruitment for Highlands University. “It gives students a chance to talk to faculty, and the goal is to help motivate students to pursue a post secondary education. At College Night, they can gather information about different disciplines and career paths.”
Mardi Gras is the theme this year for College Night, with traditional Mardi Gras finger food served in a free light buffet.
“We chose the Mardi Gras theme because we wanted to do something different and fun to catch the students’ attention,” said Jenny Arguello, who works in the Highlands University Recruitment Office and organizes College Night each year. “Every information table will give Mardi Gras beads to people who visit their table. Participants who collect beads from 15 tables get a free T-shirt.”
Entertainment for College Night includes the Highlands University Los Rumberos Salsa Club and Los Zapateados, a community dance group.
Last year more than 500 participants from across northern New Mexico attended College Night to learn about programs at Highlands and Luna.
Registration is not required for College Night. For more information, call Highlands at 505-454-3593 or Luna at 505-454-5312.
