Sixth grade students from West Las Vegas Middle School watch a chemistry demonstration by Gabriel Lovato, left, for a STEM Day at Highlands Nov. 12. Lovato is a senior pre-health major from Las Vegas, New Mexico, and a member of the university’s American Chemical Society chapter. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. ARMAS scholars, led by organic chemistry professor Brooks Maki, organized the event. ARMAS is the university’s award-winning Achieving in Research, Math and Science program. Its scholars earn scholarships for academic excellence that are funded through the National Science Foundation.
